Have a New Kid by Friday!

"Have a New Kid by Friday" is excellent educational resource written by a prominent US psychiatrist Dr. Kevin Leman that every parent should read.

This essential guide teaches parents how to change their child's attitude, behaviour and character in only five days!

In my own opinion, I suggest not to be fooled into thinking that it is the children who need to change, as it is rather the parents themselves who need to make the changes first in order to have a more productive and cooperative relationship with their children.

Overall, while Dr. Leman's attitude was a bit off-putting at the start, he did come up with effective techniques, for forming better relationships, not just for parents whose kids display bad behaviour, but for parents who simply want to get informed on their own parenting styles and find out what kind of parents they are.

This book presents a bit of a reminder to parents to not give in to their kids dramas, but not every situation can have an absolutely tidy resolution and this should be kept in mind.

My favourite idea carried out throughout this book is that is teaches parents to stay in control, not to get angry, while saying something once, being firm and walking away. I also liked the idea of encouragement for the kids and praising them for their goods actions when appropriate.
This learning and behaviour modification theory is based on the operant conditioning learning theory developed by Skinner. Operant conditioning, sometimes referred to as instrumental learning, is a method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behaviour. It encourages the subject to associate desirable or undesirable outcomes with certain behaviours.
